Junior & Teen Vet Club - Adaptable Animals
On Wednesday 1st of August the Widening Participation team held a day long series of events, starting with a fantastic visit from the University of Hertfordshire summer school pupils. Their summer school was Harry Potter themed, so we discussed how anatomy and adaptations were important when creating the creatures for the various films, and gave them the change to create their own mythical creature drawing, using our specimens.
Then we welcomed our Junior and Teen Vets, part of our vet club program. They settled down in the Alumni lecture theater for a talk about amazing animal adaptions. We covered our own adaptations for running, as well as how animals jump and fly, as well as unusual adaptations like mimicry and weaponry.

Next the junior vets were able to put their anatomy knowledge to the test, and recreate the internal anatomy of a horse onto their very own unicorn!
The teen vets were able to use our specimens to create a fantastic new creature, or simply draw a beautiful representation of what they saw in front of them. These drawings could be the first step in submitting to the Nancy Rothwell Award, a art competition for young people run by the Royal Society of Biology in collaboration with the ºÚÁÏÉç. Everyone also had the cahnce to visit our circus of activities, from gowning to listening to your own heartbeat, cheetah collars to mystery objects. The visitors were really engaged and had some fantastic answers, as well as their own questions.
We really enjoyed welcoming so many new faces, particularly to our Hawkshead campus. We hope to see you all again in the future.
