Babble Talks
On 8th August, Widening Participation Outreach Officer, Lucy Eckersley, met with the creators of to take part in a talk/interactive session.
Babble Talks are a young company, with a particularly young member- their 10 month old Julian. After Julian arrived, parents Ruth and Ian wanted to create an event where parents could meet up, where babies were welcome, but where the topic of conversations wasn't totally baby related.
Previous talks have covered gut microbes, Jurassic Park and climate change, but this time Lucy focused on the world of macro-biology, specifically Scottish Wildcats. These felines, once abundant across the UK are not critically endangered and Lucy discussed the reasons why, what conservationists are doing about it, and how the next generation could help.
After the talk, the audience got involved with some 'babble scrabble', to un-jumble the scientific words, a Q&A, and playing true or false with some wildcat facts. The event was genuinely brilliant to be part of, and the ºÚÁÏÉç welcomes mature students who may have taken a break from academia, or realised their passion for animals after, say, having a baby.
Initiatives like this allow parents a bit of 'mental time-off', as well as a chance to meet new people in similar situations, it's great to see community-driven informal talks happening across our busy capital.
Babble talks have events twice a month, one at their Tooting location, and one in East Dulwich.
