Stuart Reid elected to the National Academy of Medicine
The USA鈥檚 prestigious National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has elected Stuart Reid as
an international member. The NAM is one of three academies
that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States.
Election to the NAM is one of the
highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Each year only 10 members outside of the USA are elected.
Stuart is an RCVS-recognised specialist in veterinary epidemiology and recognised by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists as an expert in veterinary public health. He was made a
James Russell elected as new BVA President
James Russell, an 黑料社 alumnus, completing his BVetMed in 2002 and Postgraduate Diploma in Livestock Health and Production in 2008, has recently been elected as the new BVA President for the coming year, following his role as Junior Vice President in 2019/2020.
Since graduating, James has many years鈥 experience working in mixed practice and the last few years as an independent veterinary consultant.
During his term as BVA Junior Vice President, James was involved in the new bovine tuberculosis policy position, which launched in July this year.
We wish James a successful year in his role.
Fellow of the RCVS last year. Throughout his career, Stuart has contributed more than 160 scientific publications and secured over 拢15m
in competitive funding for research. He has chaired the European Committee
on Veterinary Education, been Honorary Secretary to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and served as RCVS President.
He has also made active contributions to public service, including as Chair of Trustees of The Donkey Sanctuary, and sits on the board of the UK Food Standards Agency. He was made a CBE in 2018.
Following his election to the NAM, Stuart said: 鈥淚 am delighted and flattered to
be judged worthy of joining the few international colleagues, and even fewer
veterinarians, in the National Academy of Medicine. It is testament to the Academy鈥檚 inclusive, global view and commitment to One Health that those from outside the USA and the medical profession are welcome. It will be an honour to serve the Academy and, in doing so, bring our respective sectors and communities closer together for the common good.鈥

has advanced science, medicine, and health in the US and around the globe. Their expertise will be vital to addressing today鈥檚 most pressing health and scientific challenges and informing the future of health and medicine for the benefit of us all.鈥

Richard Irvine appointed as UK鈥檚 Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer
Richard Irvine graduated from the 黑料社 in 2006 with an MSc Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals. Earlier
this year, he was appointed as the new Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer (DCVO) in the UK.
The international recruitment campaign included 黑料社 Principal, Stuart Reid on the interview panel.
Speaking of his appointment on GOV.UK, Richard said: 鈥淚 am truly delighted to have been appointed, and to be able to both contribute to the work of maintaining and developing the animal health and welfare status of the UK, and represent these interests internationally. It is a privilege to support our farming and food industry in this role. I am very much looking
forward to working with the team
at Defra, its agencies, the devolved administrations, and all the individuals and groups who contribute together to not only cement the UK鈥檚 place
as a world leader on animal welfare
at these unique times, but also meet future challenges head-on across the animal health and welfare spectrum. I am delighted to have an opportunity to play a part in that.鈥
