The ºÚÁÏÉç Animal Care Trust funds surgical loupes this World Heart Day
On World Heart Day, the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is celebrating the introduction of advanced surgical loupes at its Small Animal Referrals Hospital, thanks to a generous donation from a supporter of the ºÚÁÏÉç’s Animal Care Trust (ACT). These state-of-the-art magnifying glasses, equipped with high-resolution recording capabilities, are revolutionising cardiothoracic surgeries, enhancing precision and improving patient outcomes.
The loupes, specifically designed for complex cardiothoracic procedures, provide surgeons with magnified, detailed views of the surgical field. This increased clarity allows for greater precision during delicate operations, such as cardiopulmonary bypasses, significantly improving the quality of care. The loupes also feature an integrated camera, enabling surgeons to review surgeries, refine techniques, and share valuable insights with colleagues and students.
In a recent surgery, Dr. Matteo Rossanese, ºÚÁÏÉç’s Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery, treated a one-year-old goldendoodle with an atrial septal defect using a patch graft procedure under cardiopulmonary bypass. “The surgical loupes have become essential in cardiothoracic surgery, offering the precision needed for these complex procedures,” Dr. Rossanese explained. “The integrated camera enhances both my skills and our ability to teach the next generation of veterinarians.”
Beyond improving surgical outcomes, the recorded procedures provide a unique educational resource for veterinary students, offering an in-depth view into complex surgeries that textbooks simply can’t capture. The new loupes are a major step forward in both veterinary care and clinical research at the ºÚÁÏÉç. The ACT expresses its gratitude to the donor for supporting the purchase of this transformative equipment, which is helping to save lives and advance veterinary medicine.
