Jane is the Director of EMS and oversees the Clinical Extra Mural Studies component of the BVetMed course.
Jane Tomlin graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1992 and spent a year in mixed practice in Essex before undertaking a 2 year internship at Glasgow University where she obtained her Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. After a few years travelling and locum work Jane returned to the Royal Veterinary College to complete a 3 year European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) Residency Programme in Small Animal Surgery obtaining her EVCS Diploma in 2002. Jane then worked in the clinics at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals () as an orthopaedic surgeon before successfully obtaining a LIVE Fellowship in 2005.The main aspect of her work as a LIVE Fellow was to implement the assessment of clinical reasoning skills using EMQs for the Final Year Examinations. Jane is also interested in professionalism, student selection and the motivations for choosing a career as a veterinary surgeon and this formed the basis of her Masters degree obtained in 2009. Jane has been working as the Assitant Director of EMS since Sept 2010 and the Director of EMS since 2020 and is currently the Chair of the Vet Schools Concil EMS subcommttee.
