Department: Pathobiology & Population Sciences
Campus: Hawkshead
Research Groups: Host-Pathogen Interactions and Vaccinology
I am a lecturer in virology. I am interested in how viruses evolve to jump between hosts or become resistant to antiviral drugs. I work with influenza viruses and canine coronaviruses. I am always interested to hear from students at the ºÚÁÏÉç or elsewhere who would like to join the lab.
Daniel is an evolutionary virologist who uses experimental evolution to study how viruses adapt. He did his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at Oxford before moving to Yale University to study bacteriophage evolution with Prof. Paul Turner for his PhD. He returned to the UK to study drug resistance to novel antivirals in influenza jointly between PHE and Imperial in Prof. Wendy Barclay’s lab. During 2020, he worked on understanding how mutations in the furin-cleavage site affect transmission in SARS-CoV-2. Recently, he has been studying how influenza evolves to overcome a host factor in chickens gene-edited to be resistant to influenza. He is currently using experimental evolution to research drug resistance in coronaviruses as well as investigting host switching in influenza.

I teach virology to vets, bioscience undergraduates and postgraduate students. I am happy to host RP2 and student projects either based in the lab or purely computational projects.
